Here is a lone exception to the New England concept that all Yankee historical sites date back to the time of Moses.

Since the early 1700s, the Wayside Inn, located in Sudbury, MA has been plying weary travelers with high priced mugs of grog and chops of mutton. If Bill and Ted needed a stop to gather historical figures, this “hous of entertainment” would be a goldmine. George Washington, The Marquis de Lafayette (no relation to de Sade), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau and others have plunked down their hard-earned coin to gaff a few beverages at the Inn.

The gristmill, which makes up a most of this gallery isn’t old by any stretch of the imagination. It was built by Henry Ford in 1929. That was the same year, good ole’ Henry hijacked the Postville Courthouse from my home town of Lincoln, IL and move it to Michigan.

Actually, the gristmill has an interesting history. Allow me to redirect you the Wayside Inn website for the full details.

Digging down into the archives to relive a few days in the sun at the southernmost point of the United States.

Key West and New Orleans have a number of commonalities. However, topping the list is the fact both places have to be taken in moderation. Staying any longer than a few days will result in a wild desire to go native and not look back.

A few years back, I boarded a plane to the only true banana republic in the US affectingly referred to as the Conch Republic. Key West has that wee bit of magic that makes it hard to resist. There is a live and let live attitude that’s pervasive throughout the island. It’s also one of the best places to celebrate the sunset. Of course drunken debauchery is a 24/7 activity, but there’s plenty of history packed into the island’s diminutive 5.9 square mile footprint.

There are tales of pirates, shipwrecks and ghosts. A short walk around Old Town will explain why the likes of President Harry S. Truman, Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and John James Audubon called this place home. And, of course, there is Jimmy Buffett.

Fall is one of the great things New England has to offer. There is something to be said for huge tracks of land changing color with the season.

On the edge of the White Mountain National Forest sits the small town of Jackson, NH. As the crow flies, it’s roughly a 3 hour drive north of the metro Boston area through some of the most beautiful country in New England.

In the fall of 2010, decided to expend some energy and do a bit of hiking using Jackson as base camp. God only knows what made me take leave of my faculties to undertake such an adventure, but I did. And, it was well worth it. As much as I hate to admit it, communing with nature is one of the last simple pleasures left in life.

On the way, I passed the Old Man of the Mountain. No, it’s not some smelly old hermit or a left over hippie still trying to find the way home from Woodstock. Rather it’s a natural rock formation in the shape of a human face. Or, it was until 2003 when it collapsed. Now it’s just the “Old Pile of Rubble” that was one New Hampshire’s most beloved state symbols.

The White Mountains are at the northern end of the Appalachian Mountains, they are the most rugged mountains in New England. Even though my physiology was taxed severely, it was well worth the trip.

Waltham has quite a dam landmark downtown. It’s a fine spot to watch to watch a river runs through it.

During the Industrial Revolution, many of the mills in New England used water as a source of power. In Waltham, Paul Moody turned to the Charles River to keep his powered looms operating. This allowed all facets of cloth production to be completed under the one roof of the Boston Manufacturing Company.

Nowadays, the BMC (no, not big man on campus) is the home of the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation. Core exhibits cover the area’s role in the American Industrial Revolution, though the museum also has a dedicated gallery of the Waltham Watch Company, as well as the Metz Company and Orient bicycles.

The Fat Bastard who went up a hill and came down extremely winded.

In early July, I dropped a dime on new photo gear. Even though Massachusetts was suffering from an extreme heat wave, I headed up to Prospect Hill Park in Waltham because I was itching to shoot something, anything.

The park covers natural woodlands with over 250 acres of undeveloped land. To the east are scenic views of Boston while to the west are fantastic mountain vistas. Of course, in eastern Mass the term “mountain” is used somewhat loosely. At the top of one trail is an old Nike missile radar array that has been repurposed as a cellular phone tower.

Overall, the park is an interesting place with an abundance of subject matter. However, with the mercury topping well over 90 degrees, I thought it in my best interest to head down said hill after baking my ass off to find a cold beer and review my photos.

Spring was great time to get out and embrace the Watch City.

In early spring 2013, I grabbed my camera and did of bit of exploring in Waltham, MA, my current hometown. The city’s location along the banks of the Charles River put it at the epicenter of the Industrial Revolution. I guess one could say Waltham was a pioneer in sweatshops and child labor. Booyah!

Waltham has become a quieter, somewhat cleaner place since the 1850s. Moody St., the Restaurant Row of Boston, has a great selection of restaurants and bars catering to any taste and ethnicity. But, what appeals to me are the mind numbing dull moments in the Watch City which add to my enjoyment of living here and makes this burg a great place to call home.

Escaping winter to live life like an expat in the Caribbean.

In early 2013, I spent several weeks on the island of Vieques, which is located off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, escaping the ravages of yet another winter Nor’easter. Vieques is one of those places where one can go on the lam, lay low and just blend into the expat scenery.

If you’ve seen one barrio, you’ve seen ‘em all. And Vieques was no different. It reminded my of the Philippines, Panama and a host of other former Spanish colonial territories I’ve visited over the years. But, great food and cheap drinks were in abundance. Along with the all manner of wildlife roaming the streets.

There should be more photos in the gallery, but my mobile phone destroyed my SD card. These images are all that are left.
