battleship cove 05.27.12
Over the 2012 Memorial Day weekend, I traveled to Battleship Cove, located on scenic Mt. Hope Bay in Fall River, MA. There is a substantial fleet of former US Navy ships at rest here, dedicated to the heroic men and women who have serviced in the Armed Forces. As a former Navy veteran, I was excited about boarding these vessels and turning back the hands of time to explore different moments in US Navy history.
The fleet consists of:
- Battleship USS Massachusetts (BB-59)
- Destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (DD-850)
- Submarine USS Lionfish (SS-298)
- PT Boats 617 and 796
There is also the German corvette Hiddensee, as well as a World War II one-man Japanese submarine. The bow of the heavy cruiser USS Fall River (CA-131) is on display. A T-28 Trojan and a Cobra AH-15 provide a nod the Flyboys and round out the museum.
Overall, it was a great day to be haze gray and underway at Battleship Cove. For more information visit Battleship Cove’s Wikipedia entry.
